Africa

Only one species of the genus Phelsuma, Phelsuma dubia occurs on mainland Africa, more specifically East Africa. Phelsuma parkeri occurs on Pemba, an offshore island of Tanzania. A third species, the former Phelsuma ocellata is currently classified into the monotypic genus Rhoptropella as Rhoptropella ocellata, inhabits Namaqua land along the western coast of South Africa and Namibia. It is very remarkable that the closest relative is native to Africa's south-western coast.

Certain areas are still poorly researched on Phelsuma occurrence like for instance the entire coastal area of Mozambique and southern Tanzania.
